Important Outbreak Information

You are receiving this notice because your organization or agency has either oversight responsibility or direct interaction for institutional food service in the areas of hospitals and nursing homes and high risk populations such as elderly persons, infants and people with impaired immune systems.

This is to make you aware that FDA is updating its warning to consumers nationwide concerning the outbreak of Salmonella serotype Saintpaul. The consumer message, as updated on Thursday, July 9, 2008, can be viewed at www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html. We ask that you view this entire web page for specific information on the outbreak, but with special attention to the updated message in the Introduction section and following.

At this time, no actions are being requested by retail food service operations. This notice is simply to make you aware of the updated consumer advice in regards to high risk populations such as elderly persons, infants and people with impaired immune systems, as this is a population you routinely serve.

Please notify those institutional food service operations for which you work with such as hospitals and nursing homes and organizations for institutional food service managers and administrators, and others that may be affected by this information.
